Dammeron Valley Snow

"Winter brings heavy snows and strong winds to Dammeron Valley where I live. But in the spring, the snow melts quickly as warmer days arrive. This painting was prompted by a scene at the entrance to our valley one spring, when the sky lit up with color forming a gorgeous backdrop for the little trees. The robins tell us sping is around the corner."

Soft Blanket of Snow

"I spend many hours exploring the backroads of rural America looking for interesting old barns and houses. In Utah, pioneer barns like this one can be seen in most small towns. I especially enjoyed the shapes formed by the broken and missing boards on this barn and amplified them in my painting by adding a soft blanket of snow."

Winter Barns

"I am enthralled with the textures and subtle colors found in the many old pioneer barns which dot the backroads of rural Utah. I discovered these barns on a painting research trip and was intrigued by the varied rooflines. When I painted the scene back in my studio I changed the season adding the snow for contrast."

Slushy Day

Most pioneer homes started as a small one room cabin made of logs or wood. Once crops were planted and things began to settle down, the families began to work on more substantial living places. This old pioneer home shows the various stages as the house grew from a one room cabin to a modest but dignified adobe structure complete with a comfortable porch."

Sleddin'

"Farm life has never been an easy lifestyle, but for those farm children who grew up this way there was always the pleasure of homemade recreation at the end of a hard work day. In winter, this meant getting out the old sled and trying out a few snow banks near the barn looking for that perfect ride. This painting began as a watercolor demonstration in my art gallery."

Forgotten Mittens

"I think children everywhere race home from school on the day of a new snowfall anxious to decorate the front yard with snow angels and snowmen. In this painting the children managed to just about complete their snowman before the smell of hot bread drew them inside for supper. The red mittens, however, lie forgotten in the snow."

Skating at Rock Bridge

"Skating on frozen ponds and creeks was one winter activity enjoyed by all ages in rural towns across America. Our neighbors in Dammeron Valley Utah still skate on their pond each winter. I suppose that was on my mind as I painted this scene depicting the close of day in an imaginary little village."
-- Roland Lee

Evening Worship

"Worshipping together as a family has always been an important part of American life. During winter, this meant bundling up against the cold, leaving the warm kitchen stove and traveling by foot or buggy through slushy streets to the village church. Although this scene is imaginary, the chapel is modeled after "The Valley Chapel" in Salt Lake City Utah."
