Painting # p30

Story:
When Utah was being settled by the Mormon Pioneers, Brigham Young assigned a number of families to go to southern Utah to start a settlement there in what is now St. George, Utah. The area was called the "Cotton Mission" because the pioneers made an effort to grow cotton there. A factory was built in Washington, Utah to manufacture textiles from the cotton. Many people called it the "cotton Mill" because of a large waterwheel which powered the machinery. Later the wheel was upgraded to a turbine system. Once the railroad came through and the Civil War ended, the pioneers were able to obtain goods from the east, and the needto raise cotton decreased.
