Details:
This Pencil drawing was done on location in the Netherlands. The Drawing size is about 5 inches wide by 8 inches tall, sketched with a 6B pencil in a hardbound sketchbook by Watson Guptill. I use the sketchbook as a personal reference journal for future paintings. The drawings are not for sale but individual requests may be granted for private non-commercial use.
Story:
This unique flat-bottomed boat is not only common in Tholen but can also be seen in other parts of the Netherlands as well. It has a huge heavy rudder in back and two downriggers on the sides which can be lowered and raised depending on the depth of the water. This allowed them to negotiate both the shallow canals and the deeper waterways. A wonderful big boat like this sailed into our little bay where we were staying at the Waterfront Guest House. The sailors handled it beautifully and it was fun to watch.
