This painting is a study of the water stains and shadows in a wonderful Lake Powell side canyon. I love how the surface of the water bends and distorts the reflections into wonderful amorphic shapes. Our family has enjoyed many years houseboating on Lake Powell.

In addition to the NWS exhibition, this painting was also exhibited as part of my one-man-show at the Mission Gallery November 12 through December 31, 2009.

About The National Watecolor Society (NWS)

The National Watercolor Society is one of the most venerable of watercolor organizations having been founded in 1920 as The California Watercolor Society. Fueled by the emergence of the "California Watercolor Style" which influenced greatly popular interest in the medium, it grew in scale and stature becoming the California National Watercolor Society in 1967. Finally it was re-named simply The National Watercolor Society in 1975.

The group has held an annual exhibition for the past 90 years, utilizing various California museums and galleries. In 1993 it acquired its own building in San Pedro, California, which will house the 2010 event along with a special exhibit of paintings by past presidents as part of the 90th anniversary celebration.

In addition to its exhibiting role, NWS also devotes much of its efforts to educational pursuits as well. Slides from its annual exhibitions are available to art groups and educational institutions through a rental program, while its traveling shows visit collegiate and public galleries and museums throughout the United States and Canada. Paintings from the NWS permanent collection have been displayed in various venues as well. Workshops and classes are also held on a regular basis for students and professionals wishing to continue their growth in the medium of watercolor. Associate Memberships are available to anyone interested in watercolor, but signature membership is available only through a selection process.
