Sometimes referred to as Atmospheric Perspective, this term refers to the effect created by moisture in the air and how it affects our perception of objects in the distance. Due to atmospheric conditions objects further away from the viewer appear lighter in value, less detailed, cooler in temperature, and duller (or grayer) in intensity. Landscape painters can use this effect to create the illusion of space and depth on a two-dimensional surface. Click here to see an example on Autumn Farm in Vermont.
