Mukuntuweap,
Landscape and Story in Zion Canyon
Roland Lee collaborated with award-winning author Lyman Hafen to create
this wonderful coffee table book reflecting the history of the land and
peoples in the Zion Canyon area of southern Utah. The ancients called
the area Mukuntuweap, and that name was kept when the area was named a
national park. Later inhabitants called the area Zion Canyon referring
to a place of God. Today we know this colorful part of the southwest as
Zion National Park.

This book is still a classic from one of the century's most respected
watercolorists. Tom Hill is widely recognized as one of the great painting

John Singer Sargent (Hardcover)
by Carter Ratcliff
Hardcover: 256 pages
Publisher: Abbeville Press; 1st edition
ISBN: 0789207486
Product Dimensions: 13.4 x 11.3 x 1.3 inches
In my estimation there is no better artist in all of history. Now that's
a pretty bold statement, but anyone who has viewed Sargent's originals
would have to agree this man painted with authority and bravado. Yes,
he was a showoff. I think that sometimes he would make a brushstroke just
to say "see what I can do?" A lot of people don't realize that
he painted fantastic watercolors as well as great oil portraits. If you
want to see what a brush can do in the hands of a true master, study the
work of John Singer Sargent.

Watercolor: Simple, Fast, and Focused : Essential
Concepts for Mastering the Medium
by Mel Stabin
Paperback: 112 pages
Publisher: Watson-Guptill Publications (December 1, 1999)
ISBN: 0823057062
Product Dimensions: 10.5 x 8.5 x 0.4 inches
While Mel Stabin's style is much looser and more direct than mine, I
still value his approach to watercolor painting. His examples in this
book will make you say, "Hey, I can do that!" And that is precisely
why I would recommend it to beginners as well as advanced watercolorists.
He has a knack for reducing picture elements into simple shapes and bold
washes that really work. Check it out.

Hilary Page's Guide to Watercolor Paints
by Hilary Page
Paperback: 178 pages
Publisher: Watson-Guptill Publications (December 1, 1996)
ISBN: 0823022617
Product Dimensions: 0.5 x 11.2 x 8.5 inches
This was the first, and is still the definitive book on the chemistry of
watercolor paints. Hilary Page is a fine watercolorist, but her main contribution
to the industry has been her copious analysis of the characteristics of
various manufacturers, brands, and qualities of watercolor paints. I became
interested in the stability of paint in the early 80's while trying to find
the most fade-proof pigments available for my own watercolor paintings.
I did many of the same tests Hilary did, but no where near as complete.
When her book came out much later, I purchased a copy and still use it today.
My copy is marked up with notes that I refer to constantly. I feel this
book should be on the shelf of any serious student of watermedia.

The Artist's Magazine
Subscription
As a professional artist and art teacher over the past 30 years
I have subscribed to many art magazines. In fact I recently donated hundreds
of them to our local art group. But for down-to-earth how-to articles
this magazine can't be beat. Even after all these years I still look forward
to each issue. I was pleased to be asked by the Artist's Magazine to contribute
an article for the March 2005 issue on Travel Sketchbooks.
