11: The Best of Watercolor" to feature Roland Lee watercolor "Windmill
Skies"
Book Review: The popular book series "Splash: The
Best of Watercolor" showcases some of the finest watercolor paintings
being created today. A new book in the series is published every other
year by North Light Books (an imprint of F+W Media). The theme of this
year's book, Splash 11, is "New Directions" and features over
100 paintings by top watercolor artists from around the world such as
Roland Lee, Tom Francesconi, Fealing Lin, Laurin McCracken and others.
Each painting includes narrative from the artist describing subject,
stimulus, and concepts along with tips, techniques, and description
of actual painting techniques. The "Splash" book series has
become a mainstay in the collections of artists and collectors around
the world, and is even used for classroom instruction by many art teachers.
Editor Rachel Rubin Wolf has edited many books for North Light, including
those in the "Splash: The Best of Watercolor series." Wolf
studied painting and drawing at the Philadelphia College of Art (now
University of the Arts) and the Kansas City Art Institute, and she received
her B.F.A. from Temple University in Philadelphia. Splash

Roland
Lee's painting "Windmill
Skies" is featured in "Splash 11: Best of Watercolor"
book from Northlight Books. His painting depicts a landscape in
the Zeeland area of the Netherlands, where he travelled and painted
in 2008. Spending two weeks in the Dutch countryside gave Roland
a chance to sketch the land in its many moods and study the uniqueness
of the barns, cottages, and ever-present windmills. He was fascinated
by the Holland skies which seemed to change frequently during
the course of a day. The flat nature of the land presented a clear
view of the towering windmills sillouetted against the broiling
skies. Days end always seemed to bring a colorful sunset which
cast a warm red glow over the scene. This painting is my interpretation
of the experience.
