"The Sentinel, Zion National Park" Watercolor Painting step by step demonstration

Sometimes we grab a travel photo and think if we just paint it how it is we will come up with a great painting. Photos are never that good -- at least mine aren't. As artists, our role is to make a new image which reflects our feelings for a place, not replicate a photo. That is why I never paint a place I haven't been to, studied, sketched, and experienced fully. Without the artists' emotional involvement a painting is just paint on paper, not art. I have spent over 35 years exploring Zion National park and each painting reflects my love for the place.
