"Hectorville Covered Bridge Vermont" - Step by Step Watercolor Painting Lesson by Roland Lee
Vermont has numerous covered bridges which are especially picturesque in the fall. Most have been restored and are still in use, but some are too weak to support modern vehicles. I kept an extensive
travel sketchbook on this trip, which gave me lots of reference material to paint from back in my studio. I was able to do some on location painting as well (
see Quiet Creek), but this particular painting was done back in my studio. Notice how my on location sketch helped me to understand the structure of the bridge, while my "
thumbnail sketch" helped me established the
value relationships prior to starting the painting. these steps are critical to the painting process.
